My Toxic-Free Living Journey: From Endometriosis to Empowerment
Creating a toxin-free home is deeply personal to me. It wasn’t inspired by a trend or lifestyle movement — it was born from a health crisis that changed my life. It became a lifeline.
Years ago, while grappling with endometriosis and struggling to conceive, I knew something was deeply off. My body was crying for help, and my intuition grew louder with every cycle, every flare-up. I began researching and was stunned by what I found: everyday products — from scented laundry detergent to store-bought tampons were laced with chemicals that quietly disrupt our hormones¹.
Ingredients like phthalates, parabens, synthetic fragrances, and formaldehyde were hiding in the products I used every single day. I had unknowingly invited endocrine disruptors into my body, my home, and my life².
That’s when I decided to clean house — literally and energetically.
Toxins, Hormones & Hidden Disruptors
So many everyday items –– from makeup and soap to pads, detergent, and toothpaste contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that can mimic, block, or alter our hormones. These include:
Phthalates (commonly found in synthetic fragrances)
Parabens (preservatives in personal care)
Bleached and pesticide-laced cotton (in tampons and pads)
Fluoride and sulfates (in oral and hair care)
Formaldehyde-releasing agents (in cleaning products)
These toxins build up over time and can interfere with everything from menstrual cycles to mood, fertility, thyroid health, and inflammation³.
Once I started eliminating these from my home, everything began to change.
What We Use in Our Toxic-Free Home
Over the years, my home has become a sanctuary of clean, conscious living. Here’s what we use (and love):
Hand Soap
We make our own homemade, non-toxic hand soap using castile soap, essential oils, and filtered water. Simple. Gentle. Effective.
Laundry
In the early days, when we used cloth diapers for our son⁴, I made our own homemade laundry detergent. Now that cleaner options are more accessible, we buy toxic-free laundry detergent that’s free of dyes, artificial fragrance, and optical brighteners.
For fabric softener, we use plain white vinegar — it softens, deodorizes, and breaks down residue. We also completely avoid fabric dryer sheets⁵ due to their known hormone-disrupting chemicals.
Makeup
Back when clean beauty wasn’t widely available⁶, I relied on Tarte and Bare Minerals –– brands that left out the parabens, phthalates, and mystery ingredients. And I’ve never looked back, and I still use them. Now, there are more toxin-free cosmetic brands, but I appreciate these pioneers in clean makeup.
Toothpaste & Personal Care
We use only Ayurvedic, fluoride-free toothpaste⁷, along with natural shampoo, conditioner, and moisturizer — all free of SLS, artificial fragrance, and parabens.
For skincare, we apply a natural blend of shea butter and cold-pressed sesame oil — a nourishing, anti-inflammatory, and deeply grounding combination.
Menstrual Care
One of the most powerful changes: switching to a menstrual cup/ disc instead of pads or tampons. This not only reduces exposure to bleached materials, dioxins, hormone disruptors, and plastics but also supports vaginal health⁸. It’s safer for the body and the planet.
Home Environment and Living Spaces
Beyond personal care and cleaning products, we also pay attention to our overall living environment by:
Choosing organic or low-chemical bedding whenever possible¹³
Avoiding vinyl and heavily synthetic materials in home furnishings¹²
Reducing unnecessary electromagnetic field (EMF)¹¹ exposure by limiting device usage around sleep spaces
These adjustments support deeper rest, nervous system recovery, and overall hormonal resilience.
Why Your Home Might Be Messing With Your Hormones
We’re exposed to hundreds of chemicals before we even step outside our homes. These include:
Dioxins in bleached paper products
Triclosan in antibacterial soaps
Synthetic fragrances⁹ in air fresheners, detergents, and lotions
Plasticizers in storage containers and food packaging
Synthetic flooring, furnishings, and treated bedding materials
These substances can contribute to:
Hormonal imbalances and cycle irregularity
Increased period pain and PMS
Fertility issues
Thyroid and adrenal dysfunction
Anxiety, fatigue, and mood instability
For me, these exposures were part of the mystery behind my long-standing health challenges. Eliminating them was one of the most powerful forms of medicine I never knew I needed.
My Healing Journey and Fertility
Healing did not happen overnight. It unfolded through a series of conscious, consistent choices. My journey included multiple supportive approaches under professional guidance alongside lifestyle and environmental changes.
Through nourishing food, herbal support, self-care practices, and creating a low-toxin home, I gradually began to feel better. Over time, my fertility challenges resolved, and the chronic pain associated with endometriosis faded. Today, I remain symptom-free, and my health feels grounded and sustainable.
Creating a toxin-free home did more than reduce chemical exposure - it created an environment of clarity, stability, and healing for myself, my child, and the future I once feared losing.
Why This Matters
Each small change contributes to the larger picture of wellness. Every mindful swap supports vitality rather than draining it.
In Ayurveda, this nurturing vitality is described as Ojas - the subtle essence that supports immunity, emotional resilience, reproductive health, and inner radiance. Ojas is strengthened through nourishment, stability, and restful environments. A calm, low-toxin living space supports this vital essence at the deepest level.
Final Thoughts: One Step at a Time
If you are experiencing hormonal symptoms, unexplained fatigue, reproductive challenges, or chronic inflammation, your environment may be an important place to begin exploring.
Start small:
Replace your hand soap
Eliminate dryer sheets
Upgrade menstrual care products
Reduce synthetic fragrance exposure
Create a sleep space that supports rest and recovery
These seemingly small decisions can create profound transformation over time.
True healing often begins at home - through awareness, intention, and care.
